🤖 Understanding Doodle Generations: F1, F1B, and Beyond

If you've spent time researching doodle breeds like Goldendoodles, Bernedoodles, or Labradoodles, you've likely come across terms like "F1" or "F1B." These generational labels may sound technical, but they’re actually quite simple once you break them down. And understanding them is key to choosing the right puppy for your family.

In this post, we’ll demystify what each generation means, how it impacts coat type, allergy-friendliness, and personality—and what you can expect from our upcoming F1 Bernedoodle litter.

🔄 What Does "F" Stand For?

The "F" in doodle generations stands for Filial, which simply refers to the generation of offspring. The number and letters that follow indicate how the dog was bred.

💫 F1 Doodles (First Generation)

F1 = 50% Poodle + 50% Purebred (e.g., Bernese Mountain Dog)

This is the first cross between a Poodle and another breed, like a Bernese Mountain Dog.

  • Coat: Wavy to straight; moderate maintenance

  • Shedding: Moderate (some dander or fur is possible)

  • Allergy-Friendliness: Variable (not guaranteed to be hypoallergenic)

  • Personality: Balanced; benefits from both breed temperaments

🐩 F1B Doodles (First Generation Backcross)

F1B = 75% Poodle + 25% Purebred

An F1B doodle is created by breeding an F1 doodle back to a Poodle. This generation is often chosen for families concerned about allergies.

  • Coat: Curly, tighter poodle-like coat

  • Shedding: Very low to none

  • Allergy-Friendliness: High (better for allergy-sensitive households)

  • Grooming: Higher maintenance due to curl

🌱 F2 and Multigen Doodles

F2 = F1 x F1 Multigen = At least one parent is already a doodle beyond F1

These litters are more unpredictable in terms of coat and health unless produced by a very experienced breeder with deep knowledge of genetics.

  • Coat: Can range from straight to curly, even within the same litter

  • Shedding: Inconsistent

  • Breeder Expertise: Crucial to avoid health or coat surprises

🎓 Choosing the Right Generation for Your Family

  • Allergies or asthma? F1B or curly Multigen are best.

  • Want a classic doodle look? F1 is iconic and balanced.

  • Okay with brushing and grooming? You have more flexibility.

There’s no "wrong" generation—only what's best for your family’s lifestyle.
